Al Pnei Habriaa Kula

That's the Hebrew title of "All Over Creation," and this is the cover of the Israeli edition! My wonderful editor at the publishing house, Am Oved, just emailed it to me. I'm assuming "Al Pnei Habriaa Kula" is a direct translation of "All Over Creation," but I may be mistaken, and if so, somebody please correct me.

I have to say, I love this cover. I think it's hilarious. It's always fascinating to see how different publishing houses in different countries interpret the books, and which aspects they choose to emphasize. To me, "All Over Creation" is a book about our attempts to control life, the tragic and absurd lengths to which we humans will go in order to exert our will over the lifeforms around us. This cover illustration, of a tortured, anthropomorphicized, and somewhat tragic-looking potato, certainly nails this in a very comic way, which is appropriate, because much of the book is comic. But not all of it. Much of the book comes from the despair I felt at my inability to control or forestall a very natural and inevitable event: the death of my elderly father. Much of it comes from the anger I continue to feel at my inability to control or forestall a very unnatural event: the destruction of our environment by corporations for profit. So I wanted "All Over Creation" to encompass these extremes, and I hope that readers, drawn by this quirky and tortured cover, will find this range in the story, too.

Comments:
Browsing a bookstore I saw the cover of the book and was attracted both to the cover-art and the name. You'll excuse me for not having read anything by you ... yet. I'm way behind on my reading list (make that years behind) but I look forward to reacing All Over Creation.

But that's not why I'm writing. I'm not sure how many Hebrew speakers will see your blog, so, having seen it, I'll take the time to answer your question:
Yes, the Hebrew translation of the title is a good one.

And when I'll finally get around to reading the book, though I trust I'll read it in English, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Well, here is another Hebrew speaker who reads this blog...
Just started reading your book today ( after reading "My Year of Meats" some time ago). Looks as if I am going to enjoy this one not less than the first, which I liked a lot. Good writing, good ideas- you are one of the best!

so happy u like the cover illustration, although i cant claim credit for the idea which was the editors.
it is always easier to do an illustration for a book that u really like.
i hope it does well in israel
best regards

Here comes th third comment. Saw the book today at the bookstore. I adored your previous book, and I'm sure going to read this one, in Hebrew after finishing the 2 books waiting on me shelf.
Keep up the good work.

The hebrew translation is good. I loved both your books. My year of meat has made me become a vegetarian. All over creation is absolutely beautiful. looking forward to your next book...

I just finished reading "My Year of Meats" (actually, I have a problem with my eyes, so I listened to the unabridged audio version), which I enjoyed very much. I read "All Over Creation" (same way) a couple years ago, and liked it a lot as well. Interesting characters, and I like the way you aren't afraid to dig into environmental issues. I'd love to know if reading your books has made anyone think differently or change their lives in any way. Anyway, I hope you will write more along these lines. Your website mentions a short story about "spy kids" on a university campus. Have you ever thought of writing a novel for kids?

hello
iv'e just finished to read the book. i couldn't stop. i like your writing very much, it was really exciting. thank you

I just read All Over Creation a few months ago, and I've been trying to figure out if it's been translated into Korean or not so I can pass it on to some friends here in Seoul.

Could you tell me if either of your books have been translated into Korean? And if they haven't, are there any plans to in the future?

I loved both of your books! And as someone half Korean (American), also very interested in food, the food industry and the environment, I'm very eager to see your books translated so Korean audiences can also enjoy!

"my year of meats" got a very weird photo on the cover, not anything like the others, which mostly have cows on them...

well.. just saw that 2 posts under :)

what a great book !

going to read the english version now.

Hello Ruth Ozeki,
I read your 'my year of meat' and then went on to give it to many people to read both in english and in hebrew.
Now I have heard that you are going to participate in the Heshel centre conference in a few weeks here in Tel Aviv.
I will be unable to attend the conference. Will you be speaking or lecturing anywhere else in Tel Aviv as I and others would love to hear you speak about your books and work???
thank you
best wishes
Gabriela

As will be gathered

It starts with the earth. How can it not? Imagine the planet like a split peach, whose pit forms the core, whose flesh its mantle, and whose fuzzy skin its crust - no, that doesn't do justice to the crust, which is, after all, where all of life takes place.
